What Just Happened
Aider just hit 25K stars.
AI pair programming in your terminal. No IDE required. Just you, your code, and Claude.
Not VS Code. Not a GUI. Pure terminal workflow.
Not for everyone. For people who live in the command line.
This is coding the way purists like it – fast, minimal, powerful.
Why This Matters
Cursor and Copilot want you in their ecosystem.
Aider meets you where you are – in your terminal.
Same AI power. No context switching. No bloated IDE.
The best tool is the one you already know how to use.
What It Actually Does
- Works with any editor (Vim, Emacs, VS Code)
- Multi-file editing across your codebase
- Git integration (commits, diffs, branches)
- Uses Claude 3.5 Sonnet by default
- Voice coding support (optional)
- Repo map for large codebases
My Take
I tried Cursor. It is fine. But I kept reaching for the terminal.
Aider lets me stay there.
I can edit 5 files at once. Claude understands the relationships between them.
Voice coding is surprisingly good. I dictate changes while walking.
